Trouvaille
Inspiration-Themed Minizine

Trouvaille

Challenge

What Inspires You in Your Day-to-Day Life?

For this project I was tasked with creating a minizine on a topic of my choice. The minizine ‘Trouvaille’, named after the French word for ‘lucky find’, is a collection of art and design inspired by a variety of sources, from historical movements, local architecture, and modern design to everyday sights like cracks on the sidewalk or the pattern of bricks on a wall. Aimed at creatives, artists, and designers in the city of Providence, Trouvaille features bold colors and edgy typography derived from handlettering and brush scripts. As part of the project, I was tasked with writing and designing a main article spread, an interview spread, a creative page, a full page ad for a company of my choosing, a JWU ad and obviously a cover.

Endless Inspiration, Near Endless Process

Fittingly for a magazine all about inspiration, I noted what I was inspired by for every page and element of it. Some of my inspiration came from designers like David Carson and other magazines like V magazine and I-d magazine. All that inspiration didn’t make my process any shorter though. I went through countless iterations of the cover design, masthead design, the page layouts, and just about everything. I was very proud of the result and even submitted it to the JWU Student Research & Design Symposium where the project was showcased.
